Is it Smart to Buy a Used Hybrid?

Hybrids are at a somewhat strange time in their existence. They’ve been around for long enough that almost everybody is familiar with what they are and how they work, but they’re new enough that many drivers have never owned nor driven one. Because of that unfamiliarity, there exist a number of myths and misconceptions about hybrids that drive some prospective buyers away from them. At Hanlees Auto Group, we’re happy to address these perceptions and set the record straight on buying a used hybrid.

Will I need to Replace the Battery?

Doubtful, but it depends on the age of the vehicle when you purchase it. The batteries in modern hybrids are designed to last 10+ years according to Autotrader, and it’s not likely you’ll have any battery issues before the 10-year mark. If you are thinking about buying an older hybrid, the vehicle’s powertrain warranty may even cover the replacement of a battery. Do your research and you’ll be good to go. Also consider how long you plan to own your vehicle. If you’re buying a 3-year-old hybrid you plan on driving for five years, you’ll still be two years away from the 10-year mark when you’re planning to sell it.

Do Used Hybrids Require More Maintenance?

For the most part, a used hybrid requires the same maintenance that a used traditional vehicle would. Since hybrid vehicles still partly use internal combustion, you’ll still need to perform the same regular maintenance as you would otherwise – changing oil, transmission fluid, tires, brakes, etc. Every now and then, you’ll want to take the extra step of having some of your battery components inspected, but this is no huge undertaking.

What is the Cost Difference?

Compared to a new hybrid, a used hybrid is a bargain! Because of several different market forces, now is a great time to buy used. You can save upwards of $10,000 when you buy a hybrid that’s just three or four years old. Additionally, you can research government clean-transportation credits or other subsidies that can save you even more off used retail price. After you drive off the lot, the savings will keep rolling in thanks to an increased MPG and reduced fill-up frequency. Before deciding if a used hybrid is right for you, take the time to sit down and do the math and see how much you’ll save depending on your commute distance.
